BANBAN Waste Group

Timetable and plans

Fuller details of the hearings of the Select Committee and the expert witnesses heard are available from other pages in this section of the website.

Phase One - Hearing Expert Evidence

The first phase of the Select Committee ran from September to December 2001. It consisted of 9 sessions, including 8 sessions of expert evidence from witnesses working or knowledgeable in various areas of waste management. Details of the sessions are available online.

The Select Committee's Interim Report was issued in January 2002, and outlines recommended options for the management of Newcastle's domestic waste.

BAN Waste Community Days

A series of community days were held from February to March 2002, in Byker and other communities across Newcastle. These days were designed to provide diverse opportunities for members of the public to participate in the group's work, at whatever level they can contribute to. The Community Events Report was published in September 2002.

Select Committee Phase Two

During September and October 2002, the Select Committee reconvened, to consider issues arising from the Interim Report, financial and employment impacts of the BAN Waste proposals, regulation, safety, long-term trends in waste, and the input from BAN Waste's Community Days.

The resulting report, A Wealth of Waste, was issued in January 2003.

City Council's HIA & EIA

Newcastle City Council carried out a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) and Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) into the city's waste strategy, in early 2003. The Council agreed to observe the timetable of the Select Committee in planning the HIA & EIA, to include the options identified by the Committee in the assessments, and to observe the proposals of BAN Waste's own Health and Environment Impact Assessment Sub-Group. A joint steering group, including members of BAN Waste, currently prepared for the HIA & EIA.

Select Committee Phase Three

The Select Committee hearings resumed in September 2003, to receive and consider the results of the Council's Health and Environment Impact Assessments (see above), and to draw up a final report into the potential for a sustainable waste strategy for the city.

The final report of the Select Committee, Too Good to Waste, was published in October 2003. This report will be presented to the Cabinet of Newcastle City Council for their consideration and decision on the city's waste strategy. See the Events diary for details of the launch of the report and its presentation to the City Council.
