Chair of the Select Committee

Phase One: Andrew Bennett, MP

At the opening session of the Select Committee, Andrew Bennett was chosen as its chair. Andrew Bennett is MP for Denton and Reddish (Labour), in Greater Manchester. He was born in Manchester in 1939, served on Oldham Borough Council from 1964-1974, and has been a Member of Parliament since 1974. He is currently on the Transport, Local Government and the Regions Select Committee as joint chair with Gwyneth Dunwoody MP, and will be chairing the Urban Affairs Sub-Committee. He was previously chair of the Environment Sub-Committee, and chaired the inquiry into sustainable waste management.

Phase Two

Andrew Bennett is not able to chair Phase Two (starting September 2002), for personal reasons, though he continues to support the work of the Select Committee. A new chair for the Select Committee will be appointed shortly.
