What We Do
The Byker Plant Working Group (later renamed BAN Waste) was
formed after a public meeting in Byker on 19th January, 2000. 200 people came
to this meeting, to raise concerns and call for a public inquiry into the new
incinerator proposed by Newcastle Council. The Council proposed to establish a
Working Group made up of residents, council officers, councillors and other
involved agencies, to investigate these concerns.
The sections of this website detail some of the work and initiatives of the
group. You can view this information by selecting the relevant headings in the
navigation bar to your left.
- The Byker Plant
- Issues specific to the existing Byker plant have continued to concern BAN
Waste, in particular the use of polluted ash from the existing plant on
allotments and paths across Newcastle. The incinerator was also used to
produce hot water for a District Heating Scheme for the Byker estate, and BAN
Waste has continued to investigate concerns arising from the high heating
costs for Byker residents.
- Select Committee on Waste Options
- Early on in the discussions of the Working Group, the overall waste
strategy for the city of Newcastle was recognised as being central to the
concerns of Byker residents and other members of the group. The group decided
that the best way to investigate the general issues that arose from the public
meeting was to conduct a series of hearings in the form of a Select
Committee, hearing and cross-examining a variety of experts on waste
issues, so that a well-researched report could be drawn up and presented to
Newcastle City Council on the sustainable management of the city's waste.
- Community Events
- The BAN Waste Select Committee is a community-led project, and the group
has constantly worked to be open and democratic, engaging the wider public in
its work. Meetings both of BAN Waste and of the Select Committee are open to
the public, and a series of open Community Days were arranged during
2002 to publicise the work of the Select Committee, to engage others in the
debate and (most importantly) to listen to and record the views of the
public.
