TAKE NOTE: WHEREAS the deployment of Trident nuclear weapons is a threat to world peace, the global environment and the international legal order; the servicing and preparation for use of these weapons are contrary to cardinal principles of international humanitarian law, and a crime under s.51 of the International Criminal Court Act 2001; the carriage of Trident nuclear warheads on public roads exposes all the ingredients required for a radiological weapon to the threat of terrorist attack; this vehicle compound, on the North edge of Albemarle barracks, is used solely for the transport of Trident nuclear weapons between AWE Burghfield and RNAD Coulport; MINDFUL THAT the British government has proved unwilling to fulfil its obligations under article VI of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty; the UK's Trident programme is excluded from the transparency, accountability and parliamentary scrutiny that are required in a democratic society; the current time is one of increased tension worldwide, ongoing erosion of the international disarmament regime and heightened terrorist alert within the UK; the continued deployment of Trident, recent threats of its use by the UK Secretary of State for Defence and preparations for further development of the British nuclear weapons capability, all threaten increased nuclear proliferation and a more divided world; THEREFORE acting safely and peaceably to disrupt the deployment of weapons of mass destruction and to prevent crimes against humanity, we have today CLOSED this vehicle compound, and secured it so that it cannot be used to service Trident; and we warn that any attempt to open this site may itself be a crime under international and domestic law.
